Abstract

Currently, the demographic situation is characterized by an increase in the number of elderly people both in Russia and around the world. Against the background of an improvement in the epidemiological situation in the Russian Federation with a decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis, the proportion of elderly tuberculosis patients among all newly diagnosed patients is increasing. The aim of the study was to review the features of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in elderly patients in modern epidemiological conditions. The article systematizes research data on tuberculosis in the elderly. Full-text publications from the PubMed database were analyzed using the keywords «tuberculosis, elderly» for the period 2012–2024. Results. Most authors talk about the growing problem of tuberculosis of the elderly, but the contribution of this age group to the epidemiology of tuberculosis has not been studied enough. The diagnosis of tuberculosis in the elderly is difficult due to the atypical nature of the clinical symptoms. There is a late detection of tuberculosis patients in this age group. Immunodiagnostics is not informative enough. Treatment of elderly patients is difficult, and standard treatment regimens cannot be formed. Conclusion. It is necessary to develop new diagnostic approaches for tuberculosis in this age group, as well as to improve the treatment of elderly tuberculosis patients.
